    The Cats Are Grey Art Show! 24 prints on display at NY music and cupcake venue Cake Shop. The Cats Are Grey Art Show Cake Shop 152 Ludlow Street NY, NY 10002 Sept. 2 - Oct. 14 In 2008, cartoonist and music fan Jacob Steingroot noticed that while many bloggers were writing about the music they loved, very few were drawing the music they loved. Steingroot set out to fill that void with the drawings on his blog “Cats Are Grey.” Currently on display at Cake Shop are 24 of Steingroot’s band portraits, each one capturing the emotional experience of the live show it’s based on in a way that words never could. Steingroot depicts the musicians as anthropomorphic cartoon animals, placing them in fantastic landscapes based on movies, comic books, video games, memories and, sometimes, reality.     Above we see a flier for a sure to be fantastic evening of music at Bar Matchless featuring Paper Fleet, Little, Big, Butterknife and Sean! When I was commissioned for this flier I was told the date was the 30th, which will be the 55th anniversary of the death of James Dean. With that in mind I decided to draw James Dean reading James Dean is Not Dead, a Dean biography written by a  pre-Smiths Morrissey. Had I known the date was actually the 29th I would have drawn overlooked film noir femme fatale Lizabeth Scott who will celebrate her 88th birthday this Wednesday.
