Cats Are Grey

Last September The Knitting Factory hosted a birthday celebration for the Fender Jazzmaster with performances by Tom Verlaine, Nels Cline, J Mascis and Lee Ranaldo & Thurston Moore. Of the Ranaldo/Moore performance the Fender website says:
“When their fingers proved unsuitable for achieving the next level of dissonance, the musicians used tuning forks and drumsticks and invisible waves of amplifier feedback to find a place where only they existed and the crowd was merely a witness to a vigilante act of total release.”

When I began drawing this show I wanted to play off my drawing of Sonic Youth’s Battery Park show which was inspired by the cover to Fantastic Four #1. In that drawing, Thurston Moore replaced Mr. Fantastic and Lee Ranaldo replaced The Thing. For this drawing I took inspiration from the cover toFantastic Four #42 – “To Save You, Why Must I Kill You?” which prominently features The Thing and Mr. Fantastic. I drew the picture shortly after the show but only got around to coloring it recently.

This coming Friday, Text of Light (which includes Lee Ranaldo) performs at Highline Park, providing musical accompaniment to Walter Ruttman’s silent film Berlin: Symphony of a Great City. Sonic Youth are playing November 21st (with Dinosaur Jr.) at Terminal 5, November 24th (with Talk Normal) at Music Hall Of Williamsburg and November 25th (with Jemina Pearl) again at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
