Irma Thomas at B.B. King Blues

The legendary Irma Thomas is a Grammy winner, a member of the Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame and the official Soul Queen of New Orleans. My familiarity with her was mostly second hand. I knew her as the performer of Ruler Of My Heart before Otis Redding
transformed it into Pain In My Heart and the performer of Time Is on My Side before it was covered by The Rolling Stones.

Last Wednesday she played a fantastic show at BB King’s, performing both the above mentioned songs and over a dozen more including an encore featuring At Last and Proud Mary. Thomas looks and sounds spectacular. She exuded incredible charisma, joking around with the audience and taking requests that spanned her 46 years of performing. It was an excellent evening of music and I hope she comes back to New York soon.

Here she sings Time Is On My Side

Compare it to The Rolling Stones Time Is On My Side

Here is her version of Ruler Of My Heart

and here is Otis Redding’s Pain In My Heart.

  1. I’ve seen Irma Thomas in New Orleans at Jazz Fest the last few years, and she might be my favorite live act ever. She does a Gospel Breakfast that brings tears to your eyes (and I’m a relatively hard-core atheist). I’m so glad you got to see her perform; she’s just amazing :)

  2. You forgot to say how she made everybody get up and swing their hankies N’awlins style! I loved her and her fat book of lyrics that she didn’t really need!

  3. Bridget-I never figured you for a gospel breakfast kind of person. That does sound moving and delicious though.

Sarah-Yeah, not only did she have a book of lyrics that she didn’t need but it wasn’t organized in any useful manner. What gives?
