Crystal Stilts at Pianos

The fabulous noise pop band Crystal Stilts are playing two sure to be excellent New York area shows in the near future. The first is on Sunday April 12th opening for Comet Gain at Music Hall Of Williamsburg. Two weeks later they are playing at Maxwell’s where you can eat delicious crab cakes before the show.

Last October, Crystal Stilts played a wonderful show at Pianos as part of CMJ. The picture above was drawn shortly after the show but I only got around to coloring it recently. And therein lies the problem. The creative part of my brain from last October, the part that thought to draw the band playing in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, is much different than my creative brain today, the part that is fueled by old episodes of Kidd Video on YouTube. The resulting image looks like a backdrop to an elementary school play based on Jack Kirby’s Thor comics. Which is awesome and I’m totally into it. It’s just not quite what I intended.

Crystal Stilts are:

Brad Hargett – vocals – Poodle

JB Townsend – guitar – Monkey

Kyle Forester – keyboards – Horse

Andy Adler – bass – Cat

Frankie Rose – drums – Duck

For comparison, here they are in human form (but not Kyle Forester for some reason):

They are a fantastic band mixing together all my favorite musical qualities: pop melodies, shimmery reverb echoes, mumbly vocals and so on. Their record Alight of Night is out on Slumberland and it was one of my favorites of 2008.
