Hot Lava at Death By Audio

Lavalogy by Richmond, Virgina band Hot Lava is an amazing, fantastic wonderful record. It’s undeniably unique, sounding both epic and homemade, quirky and haunting, futuristic and retro, often within the same song. One of my favorite tracks, Blue Dragon, inspired the blue dragon in the drawing above. Other songs involve ghosts and, most importantly, MUMMIES! (All I need now is a song about The Creature From The Black Lagoon to have songs about all five classic Universal Monsters featured in Monster Squad!)

On January 10th Hot Lava played Death By Audio which is part of the grungy trinity of sticky floored clubs down the street from me. The other two, ParisLondonWestNile and Glasslands were featured previously on this site. The show was incredibly fun although in doing research for this drawing it seems Hot Lava played there previously and incorporated a tuba player into their set! Here’s hoping they come back soon and bring the tuba back. I haven’t had a chance to draw a tuba yet. Until then, enjoy the following tracks.

Also, the animals depicted (from left to right) are Toucan, Seal, Owl and Rabbit. The Owl (Allison) is the lead singer as well as guitarist.
